THE A. E. WAITE COLLECTION

Arthur Edward Waite was an Occultist, Mystic, Freemason and co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. Waite joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1891, becoming one of its leading figures. He also joined Runymede Lodge, a Masonic temple, in 1901 and the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, a Rosicrucian temple, in 1902. He rose high in both of these orders, eventually becoming Master of Runymede Lodge in 1910. The Golden Dawn was torn by internal feuding until Waite's departure in 1914; a year later he formed the Fellowship of the Rosy Cross, not to be confused with the Rosicrucians. Waite was a prolific author with many of his works being well received in academic circles. He wrote occult texts on subjects including divination, Rosicrucianism, freemasonry, black and ceremonial magic, Kabbalism and alchemy; he also translated and reissued several important mystical and alchemical works. His works on the Holy Grail, influenced by his friendship with Arthur Machen, were particularly notable.

Waite is best known as the co-creator of the popular and widely used Rider-Waite Tarot deck and author of its companion volume, the Pictorial Key to the Tarot. This was notable for being one of the first decks to illustrate all 78 cards fully, as opposed to the 22 major arcana. Golden Dawn member Pamela Colman Smith illustrated the cards. The deck was first published in 1910. A number of Waite’s volumes remain in print today, which shows his degree of popularity.

Hermeticism is an ancient spiritual, philosophical, and magical tradition. It is a path of spiritual growth. Hermeticism takes its name from the God Hermes Trismegistos (Greek, "Thrice-Greatest Hermes"), a Græco-Egyptian form of the great Egyptian God of Wisdom and Magic, Thoth. Hermeticism embraces the Perennial Philosophy or the Ageless Wisdom. Generally, the following can be said to be characteristic of the positive form of Hermeticism.

Hermeticism:

  • Considers humanity to be on a spiritual journey to return to a state of unity with the Divine; this is the Great Work of humankind.
  • Holds that if we would attain to the Divine, we must aspire to the Divine; spiritual growth cannot be achieved without human effort
  • Is eclectic and draws material from sources spanning the entire Western Esoteric Tradition
  • Is polytheistic, yet ultimately monotheisitic (i.e., posits a multiplicity of Manifestations of the Divine Which emanate from an ultimate Divine Unity)
  • Holds that the Divine is both immanent and transcendent
  • Holds that the Universe is Divine and basically good
  • Teaches that when we seek the Divine, we may best begin with the Mysteries of Nature
  • Encourages spiritual curiosity
  • Understands that human beings can access the Subtle Realms through technique and aspiration; to this end, it embraces theurgy, meditation, ritual, and other spiritual and magical practices
  • Urges those who seek the Divine to also seek balance in embracing all things
  • Is a poetic rather than an ascetic worldview
